Bread Pudding with Hard Sauce

A Fanny Farmer favorite recipe from the early 60s!

INGREDIENTS
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 4 cups scaled milk
  • 2 squares unsweetened chocolate
  • 2 cups or 4 slices stale bread, cubed
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs, slightly beaten
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla

DIRECTIONS

    Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. 2.
    Spray or butter a 2-quart baking dish and set aside.
  3. 3.
    Melt ΒΌ cup butter and set aside.
  4. 4.
    Heat 4 cups of milk to scalding.
  5. 5.
    Break unsweetened chocolate into small pieces and melt them in the milk. Stir until the mixture is smooth.

    Add the bread cubes and stir until mixed; soak 5 minutes. Set aside until it cools to lukewarm.
  7. 7.
    Add the butter, sugar, salt, vanilla, and eggs. Mix well.
  8. 8.
    Pour the mixture into the prepared dish and bake in a pan of hot water for 1 hour or until set.

    Serve warm with hard sauce, ice cream or whipped cream.
HARD SAUCE
INGREDIENTS
  • 1 stick butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp whiskey (optional)

DIRECTIONS

  1. 1.
    Beat butter in mixer until fluffy. Add powdered sugar gradually until incorporated, scraping sides of the bowl twice during the process. Add whiskey and beat again, scraping the bowl to make sure everything gets mixed together.
  2. 2.
    Spoon into a bowl and serve, or keep in the fridge (it will last for several days covered in plastic wrap) until needed.
